Apron Songs 4 Climate

Climate action through what we eat and cook

“I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.”— Angela Davis

“Action is the antidote to despair.”— Joan Baez

“To sing is an expression of your being, a being which is becoming.”— Maria Callas

One of the most effective ways we can have an impact on climate change is by changing what we eat, reducing our meat consumption or making a switch altogether to a plant-based diet. This form of individual action is already recognised and advocated by organisations such as the United Nations and Physician's Commitee for Responsible Medicine. Research shows that vegan diets are associated with 75% less climate-heating emissions, water pollution, and land use compared to diets with over 100g of meat per day. They also cut wildlife destruction by 66% and water use by 54%. Even the lowest-impact meats, such as organic pork are "responsible for eight times more climate damage than the highest-impact plant, oilseed." Apron Songs 4 Climate is a relational artwork based on climate action from our kitchens, through what we eat and cook. Going vegan or reducing animal consumption can be a collective journey and a form of activism against climate change and it is something we can all easily partake in. I use the idea of songs to recall how they have been used in historic acts of resistance, or protest movements. Everyone who joins this collective action can receive a free apron screenprinted by me with lyrics of famous songs adapted to promote veganism and plant-based diets. In exchange simply send me a "promissory note" with your pledge to eat less meat or go vegan. You can also send me some song lyrics you've adapted!

I'd like to be part of Apron Songs 4 Climate!
