Study of a theriocide, 2023
Pastel on paper
27 and 28 November 2023
Level 4, Old Teacher's College, University of Sydney
Animal Cultures Conference, Australasian Animal Studies Association

This work emanated from a media image of cows that had died during a period of severe flooding in the Gulf of Carpentaria in 2019. Half a million cows as well as numerous uncounted native animals were sacrificed in the extreme weather that is increasingly occurring as a result of anthropogenically induced climate change. The region continues to experience floods and as such to witness these continued deaths. The artwork evokes the rights of these sentient beings, a product of colonisation, which have over the centuries become symbolically recognised as part of the Australian landscape. Installed as part of Animal Cultures Conference, Australasian Animal Studies Association, University of Sydney, 27 and 28 November, curated by Madeleine Kelly.
